Honoring Black History Month in Our Community

In honor of Black History Month we have curated a list of community events not only happening in the Toledo area but in Southeastern Michigan and Northeast Ohio where our RLG regional offices proudly reside. Each event highlights the rich culture in our communities that focus on celebration, music, the arts, reflection and historical preservation of black history in America. We encourage you, your family and friends to check out these events throughout the month:

Northwest Ohio Events

Ongoing
Since its founding in 1837, Toledo, OH has been home to a growing Black community whose successes and struggles have echoed those of a nation grappling with race, equity and civil rights. The archives of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s Local History and Genealogy Department preserve the voices and perspectives of Toledo’s rich and complex Black history. The 2024 Bowling Green State University Black Issues Conference 2024 sponsors “Freestyle: Celebrating Black Determination, Innovation and Creativity” and features Kevin D. Richardson, member of the Exonerated 5, as the keynote speaker. Registration closes Feb. 13 at 11:59 p.m.

Savor the flavors of history and community at our special Black History Month event, “Coffee and Conversations,” hosted at the vibrant Jera’s Heavenly Sweets—a delightful bakery near UT’s campus.

This event, sponsored by The University of Toledo Office of Multicultural Student Success and the Music Ministry of Friendship Baptist Church, is not only a concert but also a vibrant celebration and reflection on the rich heritage during Black History Month. This is a free community event, open and welcoming to all.

Activist-in-Residence, Jazmin Long is the President and CEO of Birthing Beautiful Communities, a non-profit community of doulas that provide social support to Black women in Ohio who are at highest risk for infant mortality during the perinatal period.

“Regeneration: Black Cinema, 1898–1971” honors the legacy of African American filmmakers and actors from the dawn of cinema, through the golden age, and into the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement. Show runs until June 23.
